PROJECT RASA
Bringing Dignity, Health, and Opportunity to Rural Students
In November 2025, we visited one of Nepal’s most remote mountain areas, where rocky terrain and difficult roads make access to healthcare, schools, and markets a daily challenge. In Rasa village, Jumla, we worked alongside students, parents, teachers, community members, and local government to strengthen sanitation at the school and create solutions that could work in a remote mountain environment.
When we first met the students, 155 of them were relying on just two functioning toilets. 83 girls shared just one toilet.
This shortage is more than an inconvenience, it is a daily barrier to health, dignity, and education.
More Toilets
A major focus of Project Rasa was improving access to safe and gender friendly sanitation. The school expanded its sanitation facilities to seven units, including separate facilities for girls, boys, and teachers. We also constructed our first menstrual pad incineration unit, providing a safer way to manage used menstrual materials while supporting privacy, dignity, and menstrual hygiene for adolescent girls.
The Lost Soap Challenge
Across our work in Jumla, we found a simple but recurring problem: soap was often stolen, damaged by rodents, washed away, or left unused. Providing soap was not enough—it needed to be protected, stored, and kept accessible.
We developed a simple loofah-based soap cover that helps keep the soap secure, protects it from damage, and makes it easier to store and use.
A small, locally adapted solution helped make soap easier to keep, use, and maintain.
